Ikkansai Kunitomo
(1778-1840)
Ikkansai Kunitomo was born into a family of blacksmiths on October 3rd 1778 in Kunitomo Village in Sakata-Gun of Ohmi Province (modern day Kunitomo-town in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture).
Ikkansai is known as the first person to make and use a reflecting telescope in Japan.
Ikkansai’s achievements in science and engineering are impressive and wide ranging.
Some of those achievements include constructing a reflecting telescope to observe celestial bodies, improving matchlocks along with designing an air rifle, and various inventions.
